Tromso City Break

Tromsø's historic harbor and city center feature the largest collection of historic wooden houses in northern Norway, with some structures dating back to 1789. The active waterfront serves as the gateway to the Arctic, where fishing boats and excursion vessels line the docks.

Stroll along the harbor quays to appreciate the colorful wooden facades reflecting in the icy waters. Explore the historic Polar Museum to learn about early Arctic trapping and polar expeditions. Warm up with a local craft beer at Ølhallen, the city's oldest pub, which has been serving fishermen and explorers since 1928.

The Arctic Cathedral (Tromsdalen Church) is a striking modernist monument located across the sound in Tromsdalen. Designed by architect Jan Inge Hovig and built in 1965, its bold, white triangular shape is built of 11 concrete panels meant to evoke glaciers, icebergs, and northern lights.

Walk inside to admire the spectacular 140-square-meter stained-glass window on the eastern wall, which floods the sanctuary with rich color. The church features outstanding acoustics and hosts legendary midnight concerts during the summer and winter seasons.

Fjellheisen is Tromsø's famous cable car system, situated on the mainland in Tromsdalen. The cable car travels up the steep slopes of Mount Storsteinen, rising 421 meters above sea level in just four minutes.

Step onto the outdoor viewing platform at the top to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views over Tromsø island, the surrounding fjords, and the dramatic snow-capped peaks. Dine on local Arctic dishes at the Fjellstua restaurant at the summit, and walk the snowy trails in winter or enjoy the Midnight Sun in summer.

Polaria is Tromsø's unique, polar-themed museum and aquarium, housed in an architecturally striking building designed to look like ice blocks pushed ashore by rough Arctic seas. Located a short walk south of the city center, it focuses on Arctic climate research.

Step inside to watch panoramic films about Svalbard and the northern lights in the main auditorium. Walk through the glass tunnels of the aquarium to see local marine species, and watch the daily training and feeding sessions of the resident bearded seals.

Ersfjordbotn is a spectacular, narrow fjord located on the neighboring island of Kvaløya, 20 kilometers west of Tromsø center. Surrounded by steep, snow-covered mountains that rise directly out of the deep sea waters, it is one of the region's most photographed fjord vistas.

Walk along the shoreline to watch the sunset paint the fjord walls in pink and orange hues. Stop for a hot drink at the local Bryggejentene café built on a historic wooden pier. It is also an outstanding base for spotting whales in winter and watching the northern lights dance over the mountains.

Sommarøy (Summer Island) is a spectacular archipelago of small islands connected by bridges, situated 56 kilometers west of Tromsø. Known for its beautiful white sand beaches, clear turquoise waters, and active fishing village, it represents the outer Arctic coastline.

Walk across the scenic Sommarøy Bridge to admire the small islands scattered in the sea. Hike to the top of Hillersøya hill to enjoy panoramic views over the archipelago and the open Atlantic Ocean. In winter, it is a spectacular, dark setting for viewing the northern lights.
