While Costa Rica draws the luxury eco-tourists, Guatemala remains the undisputed king of Central American budget travel. Here, your money goes incredibly far, buying you access to towering active volcanoes, indigenous highland markets, and vast, jungle-choked Mayan ruins.
A "flashpacker" budget (around $50 a day) allows you to upgrade from basic dorms to private rooms in boutique hostels, and eat at excellent cafes while still keeping costs extremely low. This route hits the "Big Three" of Guatemala, providing precise transit advice to avoid the notoriously chaotic capital city.
1. Antigua & Acatenango Volcano

Antigua is a stunningly preserved Spanish colonial city, framed by three massive volcanoes. Its cobblestone streets are packed with language schools, digital nomad cafes, and crumbling 16th-century church ruins.
Spend your first two days acclimatizing to the altitude and exploring the local markets. Then, book the famous Acatenango overnight trek. This is an intense, grueling hike, but it is one of the greatest budget adventures in the world. You will camp at 13,000 feet, directly across from the highly active Fuego volcano, watching it erupt and spew glowing red lava into the night sky from your tent.
Do not stay in Guatemala City. Pre-book a shared tourist shuttle directly from GUA Airport to Antigua for around $15 USD.
Stay at a boutique hostel in the center. Many organize the volcano treks directly from their front desk.
2. Lake Atitlán

From Antigua, a bumpy 3-hour shuttle ride takes you to Lake Atitlán. Formed in a massive volcanic crater, it is widely considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, surrounded by three towering volcanoes and dotted with distinct Mayan villages.
Base yourself in one of the lake towns, which you navigate between via small public boats (lanchas). San Pedro La Laguna is the lively backpacker hub, offering cheap Spanish schools and nightlife. If you want yoga and raw food, head to San Marcos La Laguna. To experience authentic local textile weaving and arts, take a boat to San Juan La Laguna.
Tourist shuttles from Antigua drop off in Panajachel. From there, take a cheap public boat (lancha) across the lake to your chosen village.
Stay in a budget guesthouse in San Pedro. Many offer sweeping lake views for less than $20 a night.
3. Flores & Tikal Ruins

To complete the itinerary, take an overnight bus from Guatemala City (or a cheap domestic flight) north into the Petén jungle to the island town of Flores.
Flores is a tiny, colorful island on Lake Petén Itzá and serves as the perfect, cheap base camp for visiting the Tikal National Park. Wake up at 3:00 AM to take a shuttle into the jungle. Climbing Temple IV in the pitch dark to sit on the ancient stones and watch the sunrise over the jungle canopy—listening to howler monkeys wake up—is a memory you will never forget.
From Flores, every hostel and agency sells cheap minibus transfers to Tikal. The drive takes about 90 minutes.
Stay on the island of Flores. It is packed with backpacker hostels, street food vendors, and rooftop bars overlooking the lake.
Planning Your Guatemala Budget Trip
To keep costs down and travel safely, keep these practical tips in mind:
- Use Chicken Buses for Short Hops: The brightly painted, converted American school buses ("chicken buses") are incredibly cheap and a quintessential Central American experience. Use them for short trips around Lake Atitlán, but stick to tourist shuttles for long hauls.
- Cash is King: Always carry local currency (Quetzales). Many hostels, small restaurants, and transport operators do not accept credit cards, and ATMs in smaller towns can frequently run out of cash.
- Learn Basic Spanish: Unlike Mexico or Costa Rica, English is not widely spoken outside of major tourist hubs. Even a basic understanding of numbers, directions, and food vocabulary will vastly improve your experience.
Guatemala is rugged, colorful, and raw. By traveling slightly off the luxury resort path, you gain access to some of the most dramatic landscapes and ancient history in the Americas, all while keeping your bank account intact.
